Timestamps
provide essential trust services: |
| |
 |
A timestamp (or time stamp
token) is a detached CMS digital signature
issued by a time stamp authority (TSA).
|
| |
|
The TSA issues the signed object in response
to an RFC 3161 request to sign a hash of
a document or data object. |
| |
|
The TSA should be able to show that it
has consistent and accurate time source
so that the date and time embedded within
the signature can be used to show that the
data object existed at this moment in time.
|
| |
|
Because only the document hash is used
no privacy issues arise (the original document
can stay confidential). |
| |
|
RFC 3161 defines the time stamp protocol
(TSP) with which a time stamp token (TST)
can be requested and received. |

an authentication mechanism it has been difficult
to create a commercial service that can suit
